๐Ÿ“ How To Take Notes

We categorise note-taking into three parts understanding, memorising, and organising.

Understanding :

  • It is imperative to keep in mind what the big picture is so we get an idea of what the subject/chapter is really about and then create subchapters in each as in subheadings, so it makes the structure easier to remember.
  • Generally, what happens to humans is that we focus so much on the details that we donโ€™t know the bigger picture, which is beautifully conveyed by the quote: We often lose the forest from the trees. The solution for this is to summarise all the subheadings, put them under a few questions and place them in a toggle list which is best explained in the coming points.

We often lose the forest from the trees.

  • Active Recall is the way of life: revising in such a way that we ask too many questions to ourselves is helpful instead of re-writing the entire thing or re-reading it, which is rather pointless. This method, actively recalling and putting our brain under pressure to recall, helps us recall information for a longer duration.
  • On one side of the page, we will have the notes, and on the other side of the page, we will have the questions related to the notes. Hence, we try to answer those questions and put some effort to recall, or if the entire process is in Notion, then just put all the questions in the toggle list and then try to answer the questions.

If you are not getting your desired results in school, then the chances are that you are just not testing yourself enough and testing yourself is the way of life.

Memorising:

  • Spaced Repetition: this is a way that helps us to counteract the forgetting curve (if you learn anything, that information in out memory will decade exponentially, and you tend to forget it over time).
  • Talking about the forgetting curve, to counteract it, we can either make a spreadsheet or use Notion itself and keep track of all the times that we are revising the topic for revision and rate the subject out of 5 about how much you can recollect and based on that you can see when to revise that topic again.

Organising:

  • Notion is a great platform to organise your assignments/notes, and you can use the toggle list function to manage your items better. Below is a picture of the Notion app.

  • You can also link pages in between your links like this [[ and then typing out the page you want to link, and then a backlink will appear on that page to which you will be connecting your page.

I have no expertise in writing at this point but trying to write about topics that interest me and maybe down the line interests you too.
